What to write in a new baby card: congratulations messages with examples

In a new baby card, congratulate both parents, use the baby's name if you know it, add a line only you could write, and close with an offer of help you will keep. A saying is fine as a start: the German site Karrierebibel advises always adding a few personal words to the saying you chose.

What do you write in a new baby congratulations card?

Write it in this order, and a few lines are enough:

  1. The congratulations, addressed to both parents, with the baby's name when the announcement gave it.
  2. A personal line about them: how you heard the news, what you look forward to, a joke you share.
  3. An offer of help with a day or a task attached, so it reads as a plan instead of a polite phrase.

The French postal operator La Poste, whose page offers free sample messages, says it is not always easy to find the words to congratulate new parents and leaves the personal touch to you. Karrierebibel's tips include the offer: add a direct offer of support to the card, such as bringing food round or taking over another task. New parents, in its words, need nothing more than real help with daily life.

Pick any saying you like, then add a line only you could write and an offer of help you will keep.

Which short messages work for a new baby card?

Short is safe. The Dutch site Babyhelp lists plain lines such as "Gefeliciteerd met de geboorte van jullie zoon/dochter" (congratulations on the birth of your son/daughter) and "Gefeliciteerd met jullie kleintje" (congratulations on your little one), and says that with short texts like these you are safe in any case.

Lines you can copy, with the name filled in:

  • Congratulations on the arrival of [name]. We can't wait to meet her.
  • Welcome to the world, little [name]. Congratulations, both of you.
  • [Name] chose a lovely pair of parents. Lots of love from all of us.
  • Congratulations on your son. Enjoy these first weeks at your own pace.
  • So happy for you. Tell us when you feel like visitors.

What should a longer message say?

A longer message earns its length with something specific about the people you write to. Karrierebibel puts it this way: a direct reference to the parents' life comes across as more honest, and its example is "Wir freuen uns riesig, dass aus eurem Duo jetzt ein Trio geworden ist" (we are thrilled your duo is now a trio).

For a close friend:

"We have been waiting for this news since your first scan photo. Congratulations on [name]. I'm cooking for you on Thursday; tell me what you like and I'll leave it at the door."

For a colleague:

"Congratulations on the birth of [name]. Wishing you a calm start together. Everything here can wait, so take the time you need."

For the new grandparents: La Poste reminds you to congratulate them too, if you know them.

"Congratulations on becoming grandparents. [Name] is lucky to have you so close by."

What should you leave out?

Leave out poetry that sounds nothing like you. Karrierebibel warns against writing only metaphors and empty poetry, and quotes "Eure Welt hat sich neu geordnet" (your world has rearranged itself) as the kind of line to avoid on its own.

Humour can stay, within limits. Karrierebibel notes that little sleep and a lot of stress are normal after a birth, that a wink lightens the mood, and that the humour should stay loving and not come across as cynical. A joke about short nights from someone who brings dinner lands differently from the same joke with nothing attached.

How do you say congratulations in Dutch, German and French?

If the parents speak another language, a line in theirs is a warm touch. These come from the three pages quoted above.

For Muslim friends or family, Babyhelp suggests the word "mabrouk", which it says means "blessed" and is also used for congratulations, as in "Mabrouk met de geboorte van jullie zoontje".

Can the card come with a gift?

It can, and the card is where you say what the gift is. La Poste suggests gifts personalised with the first name, a photo or a birth date; for more ideas, see our personalised birth gift guide.

A birth poster needs only two details from the announcement: the name and the birth date are required in our editor, and the time of birth, the weight and the length are optional. Ask the parents how the name is spelled first, since on our proof page you type the name exactly as it should be printed.

Writing the announcement yourself, as the parent? That is a different card, covered in our birth announcement wording guide.

If a poster is the gift, open the poster editor, type the name and the date, and write in the card that it is on its way.
