Birth poster ideas: what to put on it and how to choose a style

A birth poster needs only your baby's name and birth date. Add the time of birth, the weight and the length if you want the poster to tell the story of the day itself. Then choose a style for what the poster should say, a colour for the room it hangs in and a size for the wall.

What should you put on a birth poster?

Start with the two details our editor asks for: the name and the birth date. The other three are optional, and a field you leave empty is left off the poster.

DetailRequired?How it prints
NameYesUp to 40 characters, starting with a letter
Birth dateYesDay, month and year
Time of birthNo24-hour clock
WeightNoIn grams
LengthNoIn centimetres

The name has to start with a letter because Mila prints its first letter as a giant initial, with the name overlapping its lower third. A short name, or one with a striking first letter, suits that style well.

Jip, our pictogram style, gives each detail you fill in its own small line icon, and the time of birth gets a picture that depends on the hour: a time between 06:00 and 19:59 gets a sun, any other time a moon.

Card text is a different job: if you are writing an announcement as well, our birth announcement wording guide covers what goes on the card.

Which birth poster style suits your baby?

Pick the style by what you want the poster to be about. Our 38 styles each carry a given name and sit in eight groups:

Ideas that come from the birth date

Three styles take their picture from the date you type in.

The simplest birth poster idea is the date itself: Luna, Sterre and Iris each turn it into a picture.

If nothing about the date speaks to you, the animals and the playful styles work from a theme instead, such as a favourite animal or a nursery with boats on the curtains.

Which colour should the poster be?

Match the colourway to the room. Each style comes in a set of our twelve colourways, and where a style offers sage, sage is where it starts.

The ten light colourways are sage, terracotta, dusty blue, blush, butter, oat, mocha, sand, cobalt and ochre. The two dark ones, forest and night, are for posters and canvases only, and only the typographic and Moon & stars styles offer one or both.

Which size and frame should you choose?

Both framed posters share a 3:4 shape: the 45 × 60 cm is the 30 × 40 cm layout scaled up by one and a half, so you can pick the size by the wall alone.

OptionSizePrice
Framed poster30 × 40 cm€59.95
Framed poster45 × 60 cm€87.95
Canvas30 × 40 cm€59.95

The frame is wood, 12 mm wide, in black, white or natural wood, one price for all three, with no passe-partout. Its glazing is acrylic, a plastic Wikipedia's article on PMMA describes as "often used in sheet form as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative to glass". The canvas is stretched on a wooden frame. Prices (October 2026) include VAT; shipping comes on top.

To try an idea before you decide, open the poster editor, type the name and the date, and switch styles and colours to compare them on your own details.
